Three Things That Don't Impress Buyers

When listing your home for sale, you are likely aware of some features that can help sell your home. However, there may be other unintentional ways you are keeping your home on the market. While your agent will likely advise you on what to remove and change about your house before prospective buyers come for a visit, these things can also be major turnoffs.

When listing your home for sale, you are likely aware of some features that can help sell your home. However, there may be other unintentional ways you are keeping your home on the market. While your agent will likely advise you on what to remove and change about your house before prospective buyers come for a visit, these things can also be major turnoffs.

1. Pets - Pet owners may be able to have a friend or family member watch over their animal while the home is being shown, but any trace of their presence can leave some buyers looking for other options. While this can be especially hard for homeowners still living in their house, getting rid of all evidence that a pet lives there is essential. This includes removing the litter box, crate and food and water bowls, while toys should also be kept out of sight.

2. Toys - Even if potential buyers have kids or have plans to start a family, leaving toys and other baby items scattered throughout the house could leave it looking messy and dysfunctional. Instead, be sure children have a designated play area for toys or a closet or chest where they can be quickly thrown before your open house or an impromptu personal showing. It may also be difficult for parents to keep a home clean, as it's easy to leave things around the house for convenience. Creating a special spot to store baby items can prove helpful, rather than leaving them out for all to see.

3. Full countertops - Even if all the items on your counters are clean, it could leave the space looking cluttered and messy. To avoid this, extra appliances, such as toasters and coffee makers, should be stored in a cabinet, while leaving leftovers in the microwave is also often frowned upon. Instead, be sure to put all the clean and dried dishes from the night before into cabinets and don't leave too many kitchen decorations out either.
