GL Homes’ dominance in Palm Beach County helped the Sunrise-based company climb the rankings of the nation’s largest builders.

GL moved up four spots to No. 33 on Builder magazine’s top 100 list with 1,578 homes closed last year.

The company generated $939 million in revenue, up from $779 million the year before.

Analysts say privately held GL doesn’t have pressure to develop land as public builders do, allowing GL to strategically roll out new communities when the timing is right.

In addition, the company has strong repeat business because buyers are comfortable with the GL brand, industry observers say.

“We work very hard to maintain our reputation for customer service and value,” said Marcie DePlaza, GL’s chief operating officer.

GL, founded in 1976, is building hundreds of homes along and near Lyons Road in southern Palm Beach County.

Last year, the company totaled 666 closings countywide, according to the Metrostudy research firm. No. 2 Lennar Corp. had 299 closings in the county.

GL also is active on the west coast of Florida. It doesn’t build in Broward or Miami-Dade counties.

Miami-based Lennar maintained its spot as the nation’s second-largest builder, with 26,563 closings. It had $11 billion in revenue.

D.R. Horton, of Fort Worth, Texas, again was the nation’s No. 1 builder with 41,652 closings and $12.7 billion in revenue.

Minto Communities was the only other South Florida builder to make the top 100, though the Coconut Creek-based company slipped 32 spots to No. 88.

Minto had 508 closings in 2016, down from 718 in 2015.
